10 Gifts Every Writer Will Love This Holiday Season

It can be challenging to choose holiday gifts for writers.

Receiving a gift that doesn’t align with their writing style can be disappointing. All writers have their favourite go-to writing items.

Still, when done right, a gift that supports a writer’s creative pursuits can be the best holiday gift they’ll receive!

There are so many gifts to choose and not all of them have to do with writing itself.

From productivity tools to ways to spark their creativity, I’ve got you covered with 10 holiday gifts for the unique writer in your life.

1. Subscriptions

Literary magazines, writer communities and apps are some of the many subscriptions that you could purchase.

Provide your writer with a subscription that you know they’ll be grateful to receive.

Do a little sleuthing here.

Maybe they love to use Grammarly or the Hemingway App for all of their editing needs. A premium subscription to these digital tools could be perfect.

Here’s a list of literary magazines to get you started.

2. Writing Courses

If your writer is a lifelong learner, they may love a subscription to a Masterclass on writing.

Margaret Atwood teaches creative writing and so do so many other authors!

Find out what authors your writer would love to learn from and go from there.

Again, talk with your writer in advance and see if they’d be interested in investing their time in a course. Not every gift needs to be a surprise.

Joining a supportive community of creative learners can help writers stay motivated and inspired.

3. Books About Writing

If the fees for a writing course are steep, consider purchasing a couple of books that allow your writer to learn at their own pace.

Some of my favourite starters are: On Writing by Stephen King and Wired for Story by Lisa Cron.

These books are an excellent means of providing writers with advice, inspiration and diverse storytelling techniques from fellow authors.

4. Journals

A writer can never have enough journals.

Where will they put all their notes, insights and random thoughts? Plus, there’s something special about using a nice journal rather than a lined notebook.

Consider whether your writer might like a full-sized journal for long entries or a pocket-sized option to house their on-the-go ideas.

Check your local bookstore for beautiful and unique hard or leather-bound options.

Your writer will be grateful to have a new space to capture their ideas as I’m sure their current journal is quickly filling up.

5. Quality Writing Pens

I cannot, and will not write in my journals with any old Bic pen.

There’s just something special about the lovely, flow of a specialty pen.

A pen that’s a bit inkier, feels great in your hand or has an inspirational quote or design on it can enhance a writer’s journaling experience.

I just purchased a pack of 5 beautiful pens from Michaels.

They don’t need to be expensive, although you could buy them one of those nice pens that can be refilled if you choose.

Pairing this with a journal can complete the gift and refresh their creative ritual!

6. Lap Desk

I need to invest in one of these. I find myself typing more and more in bed nowadays.

A lap desk can help your writer to feel more comfortable while typing their stories on a sofa or bed. It can help them with posture and can be easily stowed away behind furniture.

A comfortable writer is a productive writer!

7. Laptop Stand

This one’s for their desk.

As someone who spends a lot of time on their computer, I know the importance of utilizing tools that will support your posture.

No one wants a sore back or stiff neck at the end of the day. Laptop stands help your writer see their screen at eye level.

There are numerous options out there that can be portable or adjustable to suit your writer’s unique space.

8. Writing Prompts Journal

andSometimes, writers need a break from their enormous Work in Progress and a new means to seek out inspiration.

Other writers enjoy flash writing sessions sparked by a prompt not their own. It can become a means of mindfulness.

There are many journals out there designed to inspire creativity and support daily writing habits.

Some provide singular words to incorporate and others will trigger a short story by providing the writer with an introductory sentence.

Scour bookstores and the internet to discover writing prompt journals that can help your writer overcome future writing blocks and inspire new ideas.

9. Thesaurus

No, I’m not talking about the regular thesaurus we used to riffle through in search of an interesting synonym. You can just Google those.

I’m talking about an exciting collection of Thesauruses created specifically for writers.

These guides help writers with every aspect of their WIP. There are thesauruses for emotions, conflicts and settings to just name a few.

Imagine how exciting it would be to provide your writer with an extensive list of emotional characteristics that they can insert into their stories. Now, every time Emily is surprised in their manuscript, she can do more than gasp!

Both new and experienced writers will benefit from the depth that they can add to their stories with the help of these guides.

Find all of these thesauruses here.

10. A Cafe Gift Card

If your writer often craves a change of scenery, ask them what their go-to cafe is.

A gift card will allow them to sip on their cozy treat while they dive into their narrative worlds in public.

This is possibly the easiest, no fuss yet super beneficial gift you could get them.

The Benefits of a Thoughtful Gift

A thoughtful gift can inspire the writer in your life.

It can help them to develop a productive writing routine, spark their creativity or make their writing space uber functional.

Choosing gifts that align with your writer’s unique needs and preferences is a must!

Before purchasing any gift for them, learn about their writer’s personality.

A little detective work can go a long way!

Over to you!
