Build Amazing Worlds with these 5 Digital Resources

A pinterest pin of a sci-fi world. There are rocks with green vines growing out of them. Overlayed, it says "5 top worldbuilding resources for writers."

Here’s a quick and easy round-up of 5 digital world-building resources that’ll make creating your narrative worlds fun while staying organized.

These resources are ideal for fantasy and sci-fi writers as well as those crafting historically influenced worlds that are rich with backstory.

1. Inkarnate.com

A map-making tool beloved by game makers and perfect for those of us with intricate stories spanning continents, kingdoms and lands.

When you craft a detailed map of your world, you allow yourself and readers to reference where your protagonist is. You ensure that their means of travel and timing are realistic.

No longer will you be constantly mixing up which landmarks brush up against others!

Use the free version for as long as you’d like or opt in to Inkarnate Pro to use your maps commercially.

2. Fantasynamegenerators.com

This website is a vast library of name generators.

You could have fun picking names inspired by your favourite fantasy worlds, such as Game of Thrones.

You can also generate names by magical creature, genre, cultural background, character trope, location, and SO MUCH MORE!

Are you looking for descriptive inspiration? They’ve got generators for that, too.

Use this website for free and take some time to explore. There are many more generators than I could name here.

Check out these generators here.

3. FightWrite.net

If your narrative world includes fight scenes, injuries or epic battles, and you want to ensure that your writing includes detailed and accurate descriptions of these events, this website is for you.

The blog posts are written by a fellow writer with a background in various fight training styles, including MMA and judo. You’ll find all the information you need to write better fight scenes.

4. WorldAnvil.com

On this website, you can expand your worldbuilding beyond name generation and mapmaking.

Create detailed maps, organize historical timelines, craft family trees and draft Wikipedia-like articles.

Stay organized and easily reference all facets of your world. Their library of templates makes it easy to get started.

You can track connections between your world’s information by adding links within your resources, referencing back to what you’re looking for.

5. Campfirewriting.com

Similar to World Anvil, this website is best used as a tool to track all of your worldbuilding in one place.

While World Anvil hosts both game makers and writers, Campfire Writing markets itself as a platform for book lovers and storytellers.

Not only does it have worldbuilding tools such as the ability to craft magic systems and languages, but you can also plan and write your story right in your account.

Campfire Writing is made up of 18 modules that guide you through planning your world and writing your story. A great alternative to World Anvil for those who’d like extra guidance.

You don’t need to plan out your entire world on your own. Gone are the days of ripping your hair out as you try to craft magic systems with a pen and paper.
